With prevention in mind, I have developed a checklist to help you assess your risk of breast cancer including an action plan to help minimize your chances of developing the disease.
Here are the steps I recommend to all my female patients:
1. Get a hormone profile done, preferably a saliva panel including all the sex hormone levels. Test kits and requisitions are available in my office.
2. Eat three servings of cruciferous vegetables weekly, such as cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage. Add nano greens and/or nano reds available in our office to ensure you are getting 10 servings of fruits and veggies daily.
3. Eat three servings of fish high in omega-3 fatty acids weekly such as salmon, mackerel or sardines.
4. Be evaluated for iodine deficiency, hypothyroidism and immune thyroid disorder because thyroid hormone levels have an effect on estrogen and progesterone.
5. Buy certified green cleaning products for your house. See Environmental Working Group’s website: ewg.org.
6. Buy cosmetics and personal products that are free of toxic chemicals.
7. Evaluate your anti-oxidant status and vitamin D status with a micronutrient baseline panel from SpectraCell Labs.
8. Go for regular conventional screenings such as mammograms, thermography, and breast exams.
9. Set up a nutritional consultation to evaluate and improve your diet and supplementation and to see if further testing is needed. It’s better to test for deficiencies than to guess.
